PROCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This piece was printed from a Linoleum block using a combination of water-based inks to create an edition of 21 linoleum prints on rice paper. After having printed an entire edition by hand using a wooden spoon, I decided to start a project which would include my friends, those living far as well as some living near, and involve them in a long-distance shared exhibition. The idea was: I would send them my print and in turn they would take a photo of it in its new home\/environment; I have collected their photos and made a digital elaboration, you can find it below, just before the Italian translation. Before the pandemic disrupted our lives, I had been planning to exhibit some of my works in June, 2020. It never took place, and for now I’m putting it off to next year, but meanwhile, this idea matured during the quarantine, and my intention has morphed, with my artwork reaching the audience instead, and here I would like to talk about this project a bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2020, I have packed and shipped the 21 prints out to different places on this planet, Europe (Italy, The UK, Latvia, Spain); Asia (China) and the Americas (The USA, Mexico and Brasil). In each of these places, lives one of my friends who received my print as a hommage to our friendship, in an effort to strengthen our intercontinental or over-sea connection. Such friendships seldom find a real place to fully express their love and wonder for having found each other, sometimes years go by before I see my friends who live abroad. It is hard to cultivate long-distance trust and love, for one has to struggle with the fear of having been forgotten. In my experience, though, these relationships have often found their way through the thick layers of life and managed to resurface and sprout, against all odds, like a seed grows and defies life after having being sowed in the soil upside down. In this post, you can see the print edition as a crafted product, the preparation for shipping and the photos from my friends to show the print in their new environments across the globe (digital elaboration, below). There is nothing too romantic about this project, it has been an urgency to defuse the distance and explore the concept of connectedness. The feeling of the print in our hands is real in each and every place and with different time zones; the National Postal Systems sometimes is malfunctioning like a long inter-continental Whatsapp call, the latter of course though, kindles the spirits and soothes the soul.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This work relates to the making of one’s own matter, as it is suggested by the woman stirring in the pot of a possible primordial soup, as if she had just selected the best ingredients and quantities to make her own life and to cook her own substance. I’ve heard saying that cooking is an art, but there’s nothing too extraordinary about this, I think, while I’ve also heard it being compared to alchemy, in which one of its processes involves the trans-mutation of the metallic matter into gold. Similarly, raw food becomes nourishment, and similarly, I would like to shape the susbtance which I am made of so that it will become more than it is, by way of cooking my own life. This is one of the deeper meanings of this piece; the woman is also holding a drawing tool in her left hand through which she creates a design or perhaps completes a circle of creation. The other two actions refer to taking care and to self-care, as the woman is holding a creature in her arms, though of dubious human appearance and she is also applying make-up to her eye lashes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE IDEA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project gives a voice to all things feminine within myself. It is not the first time that I devote a part of my drawing practice to talk about the idea of creation related to my identity as a woman. The image itself is unrealistic because my intention is to show through the image a vision which would be impossible to express otherwise. The look of this character taps into my imagination, built over the years of story-hearing, it is inspired by characters such as the witch of Russian folklore Baba Yaga, but its appearance also shares attributes with other kinds of deities, for example her multiple arms will probably bring to mind some representations of Hindu Goddesses, though this latter wasn’t my concern for this project. The entire piece is characterised by the presence of symbols related to the feminine, such as those in the triangle-shaped pattern of the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As already mentioned, the actions the woman is carrying out are related to creation, nourishment, self-care and motherhood; in the background there is also room to let the eye wander in pockets of ambiguity, which are always present in my designs. There lies the freedom of the beholder to imagine something different to what they see on the surface of the image. Ambiguity is also relevant for in the-lack-of clarity lies the essence of an image, because there lies all what an image doesn’t show, but is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same way << thirty spokes meet in the hub, but the empty space between them is the essence of the wheel. [..] >><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original quote is by Lao-Tse, I stumbled on it in the book Design and Form<\/em><\/strong> by Johannes Itten, where he explains his teaching methods, which had characterised some of his courses at the Bauhaus in Weimar, before eventually leaving the school in 1923. (I couldn’t find a definite translation of the sentence by Lao-Tse, so I simply relied on some notes I had taken while reading Itten’s book cited above, while at Uni.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROCEDIMENTO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questo lavoro \u00e8 stato stampato da un blocco di linoleum usando combinazioni di inchiostri a base d’acqua per creare una serie di 21 stampe a linoleum su carta di riso. Dopo aver terminato di stampare l’intera serie a mano usando un cucchiaio di legno, ho deciso che avrei dato vita ad un progetto che includesse i miei amici, alcuni che abitano vicino ed altri che stanno lontano, e coinvolgerli in un’esibizione a distanza di collezioni private condivise. L’idea era questa, io avrei spedito una stampa e loro mi avrebbero mandato una foto scattata alla stampa nella sua nuova dimora. Ho raccolto le foto in un’elaborazione digitale che si trova sopra l’inizio di questa parte italiana del blog. <\/em>Il progetto \u00e8 maturato durante la quarantena, dato che gi\u00e0 prima che la pandemia irrompesse nelle nostre vite avevo intenzione di programmare un’ esibizione di alcuni miei lavori, a giugno 2020. La cosa non \u00e8 mai successa, per ora la sto rimandando al prossimo anno e intanto l’intenzione si \u00e8 trasformata, i miei lavori hanno raggiunto un piccolo pubblico di amici, ed qui vorrei approfondire e documentare un po’ il progetto.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A maggio 2020 ho impacchettato e spedito le 21 stampe in diversi posti del pianeta, Europa (Italia, Regno Unito, Lettonia, Spagna); Asia (Cina) e le Americhe (gli USA, Messico e Brasile). In ognuno di questi luoghi abita un@ dei miei amici\/amiche i quali hanno ricevuto la mia stampa come omaggio alla nostra amicizia, una maniera per rinforzare queste connessioni intercontinentali e d’oltremare. Tali amicizie trovano raramente uno spazio reale per esprimere il loro affetto e la meraviglia per essersi trovati, a volte passano anni prima che veda i miei amici che abitano all’estero. \u00c8 difficile coltivare l’affetto e la fiducia a distanza perch\u00e8 uno deve scontrarsi con la paura di venir dimenticato. Nonostante tutto, per esperienza personale, queste relazioni si son sempre fatte spazio attraverso gli strati spessi della vita per poi riuscire ad affiorare in superficie e germogliare, contro ogni probabilit\u00e0, come un seme spunta anche quando sia stato messo nella terra a testa in gi\u00f9. In questo post potete vedere la serie di stampe completata come un prodotto d’artigianato, la preparazione per la spedizione e le foto che alcuni amici mi hanno mandato per mostrare la stampa nella sua nuova dimora, per tutto il mondo. Vorrei sottolineare che non c’\u00e8 molto di romantico riguardo a questo progetto, \u00e8 stata un’urgenza di creare vicinanza e connessione. La sensazione della stampa tra le mani \u00e8 reale in tutti i luoghi e con fusi orari diversi; i sistemi nazionali postali a volte sono malfunzionanti come lunghe chiamate intercontinentali via Whatsapp, queste ultime, di per certo accendono gli animi e confortano l’anima.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Questo lavoro riguarda il divenire della propria sostanza che compone ognuno di noi, questo \u00e8 suggerito dal mescolare della donna nella pentola di un possibile brodo primordiale, come se avesse appena selezionato i migliori ingredienti e quantit\u00e0 per creare la propria vita e cucinare la propria sostanza. Ho sentito dire che cucinare sia come un’arte, ma non c’\u00e8 molto di straordinario in questo, credo, mentre ho anche sentito il paragone coi processi alchemici, in uno dei quali la sostanza della materia metallica viene trasformata in oro. In modo simile, la trasformazione del cibo crudo diventer\u00e0 nutrimento, e allo stesso modo vorrei trasformare la sostanza di cui sono fatta perch\u00e8 diventi pi\u00f9 di ci\u00f2 che \u00e8, mentre cucino la mia vita. Questo \u00e8 uno dei significati pi\u00f9 profondi di questo lavoro; la donna tiene anche uno strumento da disegno nella sua mano sinistra, attraverso cui crea un progetto o forse completa un ciclo di creazione. Le altre due azioni si riferiscono al prendersi cura e alla cura di s\u00e8, dato che la donna tiene in braccio una creatura, sebbena dalla dubbia parvenza umana e intanto si applica anche il trucco alle ciglia.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’IDEA<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questo progetto d\u00e0 voce a tutto ci\u00f2 che di femminino ho dentro. Non \u00e8 la prima volta che dedico una parte della mia pratica di disegno per parlare della creazione relativa alla mia identit\u00e0 di donna. L’immagine non \u00e8 realistica perch\u00e8 la mia intenzione \u00e8 mostrare uno scenario che diventa visibile tramite l’immagine e che non sarebbe esprimibile altrimenti. L’aspetto di questo personaggio prende forma dalla mia immaginazione, costruita in anni di ascoltar-storie, ed \u00e8 ispirato da personaggi quali ad esempio la strega Baba Yaga del folklore russo, ma rimanda per alcuni ovvi attributi, cio\u00e8 le multeplici braccia, alle rappresentazioni di certe divinit\u00e0 ind\u00f9. Anche se questo non era mio interesse per il progetto. L’intero lavoro \u00e8 caratterizzato dalla presenza di simboli riguardanti il femminino, come la fantasia di forme triangolari sullo sfondo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come gi\u00e0 detto, le azioni svolte dalla donna riguardano in generale la creazione, il nutrimento, la cura di s\u00e8 e la maternit\u00e0; c’\u00e8 anche spazio per lasciar vagare l’occhio in sacche di ambiguit\u00e0 che non mancano mai nei miei progetti. In esse si trova la libert\u00e0 dell’osservatore di immaginarsi qualcosa di diverso da ci\u00f2 che vede sulla superficie dell’immagine. Allo stesso tempo, l’ambiguit\u00e0 \u00e8 anche rilevante perch\u00e8 nella mancanza di chiarezza giace l’essenza dell’immagine, dato che l\u00ec non giace ci\u00f2 che un’immagine mostra, giace ci\u00f2 che essa \u00e8.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

La citazione appartiene originariamente a Lao-Tse, mentre io l’ho vista comparire nel libro Design e Forma <\/strong>di Johannes Itten, in cui spiega i suoi metodi didattici che avevano caratterizzato alcuni dei suoi corsi alla Bauhaus di Weimar, che poi lasci\u00f2 nel 1923.<\/em> (Ho faticato a reperire una traduzione definitiva della frase di Lao-Tse, quindi mi sono limitata a riportare le informazioni che avevo segnato in alcuni appunti presi dal libro di Itten sopracitato, durante gli anni all’Universit\u00e0).<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
