Combos in tiny boxes – on rules, drawing and storytelling

This post explores the relation between humans and the image. It sounds odd, but it’s also crucial.

These images you’ll see speak about restrictions and how we overcome them by adapting. Rules are necessary to make creativity thrive and they also constitute a structure I cling on where other decisions fail, therefore allowing my process a constant yet slow advance. Restrictions act like walls, whose pressure shapes my search, in a fashion similar to how the hands of a potter push and sustain the clay to form the material into the object they need. Any limitation or restriction can be viewed like a bank of a river which channels the water and so increases its speed. In dance-theatre, each obstacle or wall can be a potential base for leverage to pull oneself up, and this is also how I view the trying times we sometimes go through. Visual language helps me articulating these experiences, and this sequence is about how we as humans are endowed with the ability to tell stories about our own struggles, and by this very act of telling, we become able to see things from a farther perspective. At the end, we perhaps might never be freed from the struggle, but we can choose to be empowered by it and bear the pressure, defy the odds of life. This can trigger the resolution we envisioned and created, maybe it will end up being just a poster like mine below, but in the end, having something to say to life is better than have nothing to say to her at all.

Drawing has been my companion for more than 15 years. I can express with it concepts and feelings almost unatterable with words; my thinking head is contained within the bundaries of a certain visual mentality I am immersed in, based on tradition, rules and harmony. By expressing concepts visually, which are otherwise harder to articulate through my logical thinking, I can expand the collective imagination shaped by my Italian culture and surroundings. It is my belief that we are not fully equipped to understand the evolution of visual culture, in which we are constantly immersed. Alphabetizing ourselves on understanding the internet and the essence of the virtual image is fundamental, because these concepts are going to change the idea we have about being a human in this world. A creative vision entails the ability to see from a different angle to what we are used do. When we change perspective, there comes a temporary sense of freedom, as adaptability means that the image we have of ourselves will never be a defined version, but a constant work in progress.

Restrictions are limiting, but they also protect us from the terror of seeing our infinte variations of possible selves, which we could inhabit once we decide to become pliable in the face of life’s pressure on us. Queste immagini che vedete parlano di restrizioni e di come le si supera adattandosi. Le regole sono necessarie per far sì che la creatività si sviluppi con forza ed esse costituiscono anche una struttura a cui posso aggrapparmi quando altre decisioni sembrano vicoli ciechi, e quindi consentono al mio processo una lenta ma costante avanzata.

Le restrizioni si comportano come pareti la cui pressione dà forma alla mia ricerca, in un modo che assomiglia a come le mani di un vasaio comprimono e sostengono la creta per foggiare la materia. Qualsiasi limitazione o restrizione può esser vista come gli argini del fiume che incanala l’acqua, dando direzione e aumentandone la velocità. In teatro-danza, ogni ostacolo o parete è una potenziale base di appoggio per far leva e tirarsi su; questa è anche la prospettiva con cui guardo ai momenti difficili che a volte dobbiamo attraversare.

Il linguaggio visivo mi aiuta ad articolare queste esperienze, e questa sequenza ad esempio, mostra come noi esseri umani abbiamo in dono l’abilità di raccontar storie riguardo alle nostre sofferenze. Tramite l’atto del raccontare diventiamo capaci di vedere le cose da una prospettiva più distante. Alla fine forse non ci libereremo mai da tale condizione di sofferenza, ma possiamo scegliere di trarne forza, sostenere la pressione e continuare il nostro lavoro nonostante tutto. Questo potrà dar vita alla soluzione che avevamo immaginato e poi creato. Magari finirà per essere semplicemente un poster come il mio qui sotto, ma alla fine, avere poi qualcosa da dire alla vita è meglio che non aver nulla da dirle davvero.

Il disegno mi accompagna da più di 15 anni. Attraverso il disegno riesco ad esprimere concetti e sentimenti che risultano ineffabili a parole. La mia testa pensante rimane contenuta tra i confini di una certa mentalità visuale in cui sono immersa, basata su tradizione, regole e armonia. Esprimendo i concetti con le immagini, i quali sarebbero altrimenti difficili a parole, posso espandere l’immaginario collettivo che viene formato dalla nostra cultura italiana e da ciò che mi circonda.

Credo che non siamo equipaggiati per comprendere l’evoluzione della cultura visuale in atto forse perchè ne siamo constantemente immersi. Alfabetizzarci per capire Interntet e l’essenza dell’immagine virtuale è fondamentale, perchè questi concetti quotidiani andranno presto a cambiare l’idea che abbiamo di cosa significa essere umani a questo mondo. Una visione creativa comprende al suo interno l’abilità di guardare da prospettive differenti rispetto a quelle abituali. Se ci riusciamo, proveremo anche un temporaneo senso di libertà, dato che “adattabilità” significa che l’immagine che abbiamo di noi stessi non sarà mai una versione definitiva, ma un costante lavoro in fieri, in divenire.

Le restrizioni sono limitanti, ma allo stesso tempo ci proteggono dal terrore di esser testimoni delle infinite possiblie variazioni di noi stessi, che potremmo abitare una volta che avremo deciso di diventare malleabili di fronte alla pressione che la vita esercita su di noi. Proprio il disegno mi aiuta a dare un senso a questa realtà.
